ME AND MY GOLDEN RETRIEVERS 

 

I got my first field bred Golden Retriever in 1986. Her sire was Yankee’s Smokin’ Red Devil (Red), who was the top Golden Retriever field trial dog at the time.  I called her “Spice.” I bought her to hunt with, but I was introduced to the Hunt Test game, and that became my passion. ​The sport introduced me to a whole world of retriever trainers and field competitors who would teach me how to train and handle retrievers in the field and in competition. I began running Spice at the Junior level which was the beginning of four decades in the sport, training and competing with eight Goldens, including my best dog ever - Texas Smokin’ Rose Devil (Rose) MH.

Spice was much more than just a great retriever and fierce competitor; she was my best friend. She was full of affection, loyalty and playfulness. She became my constant companion who loved and was loved by just about everyone she met her. She was joyful to be with even on my worst days.

I have had seven more Goldens, all but one female, and all of them have Red in their lines. They share his deep red coat, his superior abilities in the field and his personality - affectionate, playful and intoxicatingly happy.

 

I began breeding my girls because people kept asking for a puppy. I learned about breeding from professional breeders whom I met playing the hunt test game. There is a lot to learn to ethically breed healthy and talented Golden Retrievers: I am still a student of the art and science of producing high quality dogs. Excellence is my standard.

Nothing has brought me more pleasure and satisfaction than giving the kind of fun, joy and happiness to families that only a Golden Retriever can bring. My puppies become a part of the family, usually appearing in at least half of the family photos, remembered by the kids for a lifetime.

I have never bred a dog for profit.  I strictly follow GRCA guidelines for ethical breeding; my standard is that each litter improves the breed with good genetics. I have only two goals when I sell a puppy: that her owner gets the best dog they’ve ever had; and that the puppy has the best life they can have. I think I have achieved that goal many times over, and I hope to spend the rest of my days spreading Golden joy to the world!
